The human spirit is a powerful thing to behold. This past year, IIRI, through the generosity of the Partnership Foundation and in conjunction with Devlo Media/Visionwink Films, premiered the documentary Home Across Lands. This film chronicled the journey of a group of courageous Kunaman refugees making the transition from a life of despair in the Shimelba Refugee Camp in Ethiopia to a life of hope in their new home in Rhode Island, with the assistance of IIRI’s dedicated Resettlement staff. The Kunaman arrive here knowing that life will still be a challenge, but they arrive with a spirit of optimism and hope. This film has educated the community on the plight of refugees around the world, and inspired individuals and local groups to get involved in this important humanitarian work of refugee resettlement.
As an outcomes-focused organization, we know that the community expects and deserves not just our efforts, but meaningful, positive results. This year IIRI was recognized by the RI Department of Education as being in the top tier of adult education programs in the state, as measured by English language and literacy skill improvement of our students. Our Citizenship & Immigration services continue to attract thousands of new clients who are referred to us via word of mouth recommendations from relatives or friends who have successfully achieved citizenship or reunified family members with the help of IIRI accredited caseworkers. The Refugee Resettlement staff was recognized by the RI Department of Health for the high quality of health support services provided to refugees. Our very professional Interpreting & Translating Division achieved record volume this year, as businesses and organizations more than ever relied on us for high quality, affordable services. On an agency level, we were pleased to receive the competitive Providence Business News award for Excellence in a Non-Profit Agency for our results in the areas of planning and operational efficiency.
Our work continues to be both relevant and essential to the Rhode Island economy, now perhaps more than ever. We thank you for the part you have played in helping us continue to keep the American dream alive and well for thousands of newcomers.
